The hackathon saw 36 short-listed teams battling it out. The winning hacks impressed the judging panel of experts from academia and industry. The first place was notched up by Pied Piper team of Sraman Choudhury, Srikar Chundury, Srinivas Shekar whose hack was based on lip-reading technology which makes use of a camera to intelligently understand the words spoken. Import Hack team of Prajwal Anand, Anurag Das and Nischita V S came up with an intelligent way to remove fog based on image processing.
PES University campus was witness to a rare confluence of music and dance at the annual event, Samarasa 2017. The cultural programme was inaugurated by renowned vocalist Ganakalabhushana Vid RK Padmanabha and renowned Mridangam artist Sangeeta Kalaratna Vid A V Anand. Dr K S Sridhar, Dr V Krishnamurthy and Dr V Krishna were present on the occasion. The event brought together renowned artistes who demonstrated nuances and precision in their performances inspiring students to aim for perfection in their fields of interest.
The audience in MRD Auditorium was electrified by the words of the scientist who answered the questions related to science by school children. Prof C N R Rao was honored with ‘Vishwamanava Prashasti’ by Karnataka Vishwamanava Samsthe at the PES University campus. The award ceremony was inaugurated by Dr M R Doreswamy who admired the contributions of Prof C N R Rao to the country and considered him to be synonymous with scientific research. He succinctly captured the achievements of the scientist in numbers, 1600 papers authored, 150 doctoral students guided, 49 works of science and 77 honorary doctorates conferred on him by prestigious institutions.
Chandini Aiyama won the travelogue contest organized by Travel Earth. She bagged an all-expense trip to Sabah, Malaysia. Travel Earth plans to conduct this contest regularly at PES University. With tie-ups with travel and event management companies such as Travel Earth the hospitality program enables students to develop practical understanding of event management. The department is in discussions with established companies like Red-Bull, Fans on Stands, Wizcraft and DNA to provide students an exposure to the best practices in the industry. Chandini is a student of BHEM programme.
The team of Noel, Sameer, Kenneth and Mohan emerged winners at Bosch KitCat Hackathon, 2017. They won Rs.2,00,000 cash prize and internship offer at Bosch facilities. The hackathon aimed to explore new and novel ways of training algorithms for maximum accuracy and robustness for various use cases. Out of the 4000 registrations, twenty were called for the first round of finals and five made it to the finals.
A memorandum of understanding was signed with Fans on Stands, Beatroute and Travel-earth, Singapore, one of the global leaders in destination event management. This marks the beginning of international exposure for students of hospitality programs to participate and deepen their knowledge in the fast evolving field of destination event management. Mr. Arun Raghu, Director and Founder, Fans on Stands, addressed the students and Dr.Vijay Kumar-Dean, Management Studies was present on the occasion.
National finals of ConQuizTador 2017, one of Karnataka’s most popular and anticipated high school quizzes witnessed a turnout of over 750 students from Bengaluru and other cities of India. Questions about a wide array of topics such as history, sports, entertainment, and science were posed to the students. Little Flower High School, Hyderabad won the “Dr M.R. Doreswamy Trophy for Quizzing Excellence”. Dr V Krishna, the Head of Student Activities, PES University gave away trophies and certificates.
The mega event organized by PESIT South Campus saw students from various universities and colleges putting their talent to work. They competed in a diverse range of activities that tested their creative skills, intellectual potential and technical abilities in a lively setting. 32 contests in 8 domains had the participants put in their best efforts who learnt to apply their skills in a competitive setting, overcome unexpected challenges and constantly improve their performance.
The event gave an opportunity to students to assess their entrepreneurial capabilities and get an exposure to the start up world. The event kicked off with keynote speeches by Mekin Maheshwari, founder of Udhyam.org and ex-CPO of Flipkart and Sachin Gupta co-founder and CEO of HackerEarth. This was followed by talks by Sharan Nair, VP M&C – Unocoin and King Sidhartha, designer Instamojo, TEDx speaker.
Students got an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the latest equipment in the food and beverage space and bespoke table arrangements. The visit to Bharat Crockeries proved to be a great learning experience. Another such experience was visit to Taaza Thindi to understand the operation and management of small format restaurants. The owner of the popular eating joint of the city, Mr. Srinivas Rao addressed students on best practices and how they maintain high safety standards on par with international norms. The Students of BBA-HEM visited the organizatios on Sep. 7-8, 2017.
