AWARD WINNING INNOVATION FROM STUDENTS OF PES UNIVERSITY
Sai Krishna and Kishore secured “Best Utility” award in the commercial software category in IDSC (Innovative design simulation competition) organized by ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) held in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA held during August 21-23, 2016.
The objective of the project was optimization of landing gear for unmanned aerial vehicles. The team was mentored by Dr. Suresh Nagesh, Chair professor in Computational Mechanics. The team succeeded in significantly improving the functionality of the landing gear. Besides providing a smooth take-off and landing with use of damping elements, it is light weight, eco-friendly and allows for plane to carry additional payload. The approach involved an initial conceptualization followed by iterative processes of static load analysis and weight optimization simulation. These two steps helped achieve substantial weight savings while maintaining the required strength. The team successfully carried out weight optimization simulation and 3-D printing to present a practical model.
