The 26th of November is celebrated across the country as Constitution day in commemoration of the adoption of the Constitution by the nation and Faculty of Law, PES University, decided to mark the day with festivity and remembrance of the yeoman contributions of the Constitution to the creation and shaping of Indian polity and society. The festivities began early with various programmes across the campus aimed at generating awareness among laymen. Later in the day, the Faculty of Law hosted and conducted a quiz on India’s Constitution, history and politics titled ‘Concours de Constitution’. Hon’ble Nadoja Dr. Justice S.R. Naik, former Chief Justice of the High Court of Chhattisgarh and former Chairperson, Karnataka State Human Rights Commission, was the Chief Guest of the event. Prof. Dr. M.R Doreswamy, Chancellor, PES University, presided over the function. The inauguration programme began with an invocation to divinity. Following this, Dr. Sandeep S. Desai, Dean, welcomed the gathering to the event and briefly explained the significance of the day and its historical antecedents. The session also saw the release of the semesterly newsletter edited and compiled by the students themselves and christened ‘Episotla’. Following this, the Hon’ble Chief Guest took to the dias and commended the role played by lawyers in India in its freedom struggle and their pre-eminent role in the framing of our Constitution. He also explained why law was a noble profession due to its inclination to service and the satisfaction of securing justice. He exhorted the current law students to recognize their position of privilege as members of the legal fraternity and take an active role in leading society. This was followed by the address of Prof. Dr. Doreswamy, Chancellor, PES University. He spoke about his days as a law student and the history of PES as an institution. He too stressed on the importance of lawyers in society. He concluded by wishing the participants of the quiz the very best. The quiz attracted a huge swarm of participants, with nearly 400 students from various colleges across Bangalore in attendance. There was rigorous and close competition from the multiple teams, but a team from the Christ Junior College were adjudged winners after a thrilling final. The day ended with an informal valedictory ceremony that also saw the distribution of prizes. All the participants and attendees of the day left the venue wiser and more informed citizens and the true spirit of the Constitution, which rests in the minds and the hearts of the people it governs, was rekindled thanks to the efforts of the Faculty of Law, PES University.
The National Seminar was inaugurated on 23rd of November 2019. The program was graced and inaugurated the Chief Guest Shri Amit Deshpande, Advocate High Court of Karnataka who. The discussion centred around the following sub-themes: Socio-legal Implications of Criminalization of Triple Talaq , Mob Lynching: Challenges and Solutions , White Collar Crimes in India ,Use of Technology in Criminal Investigation, Substance Use and Abuse in Adolescents: Need for Intervention, Online Gaming: Prohibition vs. Regulation, Social Media and Crime: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, Violence against Women and Children: Contemporary Issues and Challenges ,Criminal Laws and LGBTQ+ and Scaling down of Adultery. A total of over 100 abstracts from students, practitioners, research scholars and academia were submitted for evaluation. Out of them, 70 abstracts were selected for full-paper submission and presentation. The papers were duly presented on 23rd November over a course of three sessions. The discussions were moderated by Dr K B Kempe Gowda (Principal , Vivekanada College of Law), Dr .Aradhana Sathish Nair (Associate Professor , School of Law , Christ University), K L Srinivas (Advocate and Mediator) and Dr Mallaiah M R (Assisstant Professor , School of Law , Christ University). The valedictory function was graced by Dr. S V Joga Rao , Professor, National Law School of India University, Bengaluru on the same day where the winners and runners up were also recognised with trophies and cash awards. The presidential address was delivered by Dr. V Krishna Murthy, Registrar of PES University and the Guest of Honour was Dr. V. Krishna, Dean, Student Affairs and Dr. Sandeep S. Desai , Dean, Faculty of Law introduced the guest.
On 18th November 2019 Faculty of Law, PES University organized a special lecture delivered by Hon’ble Justice Shri. V. Jagannathan, Former Judge, High Court of Karnataka on “Facets and Paradigms of Legal Profession” in the presence of Prof. Dr. M. R. Doreswamy, Chancellor, PES University and Dr. K. N. B. Murthy, Vice-Chancellor, PES University along with Dr. V. Krishnamurthy, Registrar, PES University and Dr. Sandeep S. Desai, Dean, Faculty of Law. Hon’ble Justice Shri. V. Jagannathan, Former Judge, High Court of Karnataka, His Lordship started the talk with a brief introduction to the profession and focused keenly on the importance of reading and spending time in the library as one of the most important requisites of being a good lawyer. He stressed the necessity of good communication skills for a lawyer or for that matter any professional. He gave various examples, live scenarios, cases of biography and autobiography of famous people amongst others. In conclusion, he posed a question as to why the legal profession is considered a noble profession and answered the same. His Lordship told that it is noble because one confides his complete self to this profession with utmost trust. Dr. M. R. Doreswamy, Chancellor, PES University, while delivering presidential remarks, emphasized on the relevance of integrated five-year law programs and opined that these five years go a long way in creating intelligent and effective lawyers. Stressing on the vision of PES University i.e., professionally superior and ethically strong global workforce, he called upon the law students strive for a life marked by supreme sacrifice and service and told them to pursue litigation in order to serve the last man on the street.
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu addressed students from PES University in New Delhi on October 16, 2019. Interacting with the students the Vice President said that the judicial processes must become more people-friendly. He said that the law enforcement machinery and the justice dispensing structures must be accessible, credible, equitable and transparently even-handed. He expressed his happiness in interacting with students from PES University and felt that meeting the younger generation was a pleasure which fills him with new energy, optimism and new ideas. He called upon the students to set the highest standards of professionalism and personal integrity in ones life and become a role model for others. He hoped that as lawyers their heart will remain filled with empathy for weaker sections of society and that they will do their bit to help them.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by newly admitted students and their parents. Speaking on the occasion Justice Vishwanath Shetty observed that there will always be many opportunities for students in a democratic system. He felt that neither the place of origin nor any other hurdle will come in the way of students who put up hard work and focus on achieving. He said that in our country even a young person hailing from a rural background can rise to the highest position like that of a President, Prime Minister or Lokayukta. He reiterated that all students who have secured admission in PES University are lucky since the university is known for excellence in education. Mr. Ravishankar Rao, Senior Manager, Strategic and Planning, CISCO, a distinguished alumnus of PES University addressed the students on the occasion and suggested that students should be technically sound, develop good communication skills and understand the corporate culture. According to him the industry is growing rapidly and demands by industry will be widely varying and therefore students should be responsive to the new technologies and changes. He felt that excellence in quality and being amenable to changes is the need of the hour and students therefore must be ready for this to shine and better their career. He wished the best to students entering higher education and congratulated them for getting admitted to PES University, renowned for quality education and placements. Prof. D Jawahar, Pro Chancellor, delivered the orientation lecture and outlined SPIRIT a unique process framework put into practice successfully by PES University that enables the students to realise their potential. The inauguration of First year BBA, BBA-HEM, B.Com and Law (Integrated Honors Programs – BBA, LLB, BA,LLB and B.Com, LLB) was held on Aug 4, 2019 on the campus was attended by over 2,200 students and parents.
