Understanding quantum information theory

Students got an opportunity to understand the foundational principles of quantum information theory from differentiating classical bits from quantum qubits to extensive analysis. The concept of Bloch sphere to represent and give a visual basis for realizing the subtle quantum states of individual qubits was dealt in-depth. Dirac notation defined what constitutes a mathematical framework underpinning quantum mechanics was elaborated. The topics of quantum states, measurements and quantum gates explained how data can be coded, altered and retrieved on quantum devices. Working of quantum algorithms such as Shor’s and Bernstein Vazirani demonstrated the possible real-world applications and how they can be implemented using gates, significantly reducing the time complexity of traditional approaches. Practical implications of quantum computing were made clear through IBM’s Qiskit website and necessary libraries. Beyond Bits session on quantum information theory was organized by Club QuantuMania at EC campus on March 12, 2024.
