  • A Long Cherished Dream Fulfilled – Prof. M.R. Doreswamy

Speaking at the Valedictory of the Vijnana Mela 2022 organized for 2400 school students from government schools from Bangalore South District at the PES University campus, a visibly exuberant and happy Prof. Doreswamy, Advisor, Education Reforms, Government of Karnataka said that one of his long cherished dream to offer a full range of school educational services to government school students is fulfilled.

Providing opportunities to government school students in a range of experiential learning activities to ignite curiosity and professional ambition in their mind through lab experiments in physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology, quiz competitions with spot prizes, videos on history of science, Nobel Prizes, thematic posters and yoga practices – a balanced package of knowledge-Science and Skills – is a novel best practice introduced by him to contextualize school education in a contemporary yet the glorious historical settings of Indian contributions to science, Prof. Doreswamy observed.

Looking back to his early days as Adviser, Prof. Doreswamy recalled that from the beginning he was determined to reimage the school education services and align them not only to the National Education Policy (2020) but also on a path of growth and sustainability in terms of physical and academic infrastructure with pedagogic support for knowledge and skill development of students in government schools Prof. Doreswamy observed. He observed that suspension of educational services during COVID-19 viral pandemic was unfortunate but with commitment and innovative strategies to cover the academic loss, we can overcome all the deficiencies and deliver the expected services to government school students.

One solution was to enlist the support of Higher education institutions, particularly Universities to lend their academic expertise and resources to make good use of the academic losses and also expose the school students to the emerging trends in education and opportunities available.

In this context, Prof. Doreswamy lauded the dream Project of honorable Prime Minister Sri. Narendra Modi – VIDYANJALI – under which Universities are obliged to participate in academic development of government schools in their jurisdiction. The Science Fair organized by PES University has given a framework for the 70 Universities in the State to adopt with such improvements as they deem fit in the best interests of the students.

He pointed out that VIDYANJALI provides a dynamic framework to which new value additions could be made to expand the school education services and their impact by enlisting new players.

Accordingly, efforts have been made to involve all the Medical Institutions in the State Medical, Dental, Nursing and Pharmacy Colleges) to join the School Health Programme under the aegis of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and conduct free annual health checkups and offer primary healthcare reliefs to government school students in their jurisdiction.

Post Science fair and viewed from a broader perspective VIDYANJALI could be envisaged as a productive package for development of government schools, comprising:

    1.   Academic empowerment by all universities

    2.   Involvement of Medical Institutions for healthcare assistance

    3.   Involvement of All universities to conduct Science fairs

Prof. Doreswamy requested the government to initiate steps in this direction and all universities to lend a helping hand to the government in the best interests of government school students.

‘I am also appealing to the Honorable Prime Minister to make it a national programme’, Prof. Doreswamy said.

Prof. Doreswamy sincerely acknowledged the help of Bharat Ratna Prof. CNR Rao, Dr. H.R. Nagendra, Chancellor, S-VYASA University, Honorable Ministers, Government of Karnataka Sri R. Ashoka, Sri K.Gopalaih and Sri Ravisubramanya, MLA, Basavanagudi for their support.

My special thanks to Sri B.C. Nagesh, School Education and Literacy Minister whose help was invaluable for the success of the Science fair, he said.

I will be failing in my duty if I do not acknowledge the excellent support with dedication and hard work by the high officials, faculty and students of PES University. Similarly, the DDPI of Bangalore South and his staff have coordinated and helped to make the event a grand success. My sincere thanks and acknowledgements to them, Prof. Doreswamy added.

Shri Gopalaiah, Hon'ble Excise Minister of Government of Karnataka, who spoke before this, said that Doreswamy was the most qualified to lead the education reforms. He said that it is commendable that 2400 students have been shown the features of science through experiments in a simple way.

In my constituency, I have spent around 45 crores for school development and 130 teachers are being trained every month by expert subject experts, he said. The honorable Minister said that he is going to inaugurate a school where about 2600 students will study soon. About 730 young children are studying LKG / UKG in the 2 new schools in my constituency and behind all this is the influence of Dattu Abhiyan(school adoption campaign) of Sri Doreswamy, he said.

Mr. Ravisubrahmanya, MLA of Basavanagudi, said, "It is our good fortune that Doreswamy has extended his service to the entire education sector, not limited to the PES organization. He described the organized program as an innovative and diverse program, ranging from experiments to yoga practice.

He said that it is a historic thing that an educational institution of my constituency has spread to the world level.

  • Teenage student develops mini-oxygen plant in just eight months, all by himself @ PESU Student

OxiPlant works on the principle of Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA). The device consists of two specially fabricated stainless cylinders, each filled with a measured quantity of a specially made material called Zeolite. Dry, cooled and Pressurized air is alternatively passed through these cylinders. Nitrogen molecules get thermodynamically adsorbed by the zeolite crystals, allowing oxygen to flow out as a desired product. While this principle has been well known for over a century, the challenge lies in engineering a solution around the principle. Building OxiPlant involved mechanical design and fabrication, pneumatics circuits with proper understanding of pressure, temperature and flow controls, and more critically electronics which control, monitor, and automatically operate the entire oxygen production cycle.

Uniqueness of OxiPlant and its differentiation from commonly available concentrators lies in its Configurability, Flexibility, Scalability, and Monitorability. It is configurable to support many alternate processes such as PSA, VSA, VPSA etc. It is flexible to support production of Oxygen or Nitrogen or other gases. It is scalable to higher throughput up to about 20 lpm. It is monitorable as many temperatures, pressure and flow probes can be hooked up to provide valuable performance data that would form basis of plant tuning.

Prof. M R Doreswamy, Hon'ble Chancellor, has congratulated Tejas P Karanji on his achievement and encouraged him for more inventors.

  • Young Builder’s Challenge 2021 - Venkat Tanmay Kumar Participated and won the Amazon Web Services

Venkat Tanmay Kumar of Amaatra Academy participated and won the Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Education-Innovative Cell (Govt of India), Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). This is a national level competition which tests the scientific temperament, computational and design thinking and coding skills in young minds.

He won the Young Builder’s Challenge 2021 for his innovative Intelligent Bus Lane Simulator App which featured in the Top 10 Projects nationwide in the Amazon Web Services (AWS). As many as ten schools across the country emerged as winners and were felicitated on 28th November 2021. Amaatra Academy was the proud winner from Karnataka.

Tanmay built an app to simulate an Intelligent Bus Lane, which only comes into being if there is a bus, ambulance or any other priority vehicle passing by.

When a bus or other priority vehicle approaches, the smart lane it switches colour and alerts motorists to clear the lane. The traffic temporarily slows down as it has lesser road space. Once the bus/priority vehicle passes, the lane switches back to a regular lane allowing other vehicles to utilise it, thereby restoring normal speed of traffic.

An observant student, Tanmay noticed that the demarcated bus lanes did not help in easing the traffic

blocks and rather added to the chaos. He developed the app as a solution to help in enabling prompt public transport and emergency vehicles while not slowing down regular traffic drastically, optimizing use of resources and saving time for everyone.

For his efforts the school won a virtual AI/ML lab for one year and an Amazon voucher of Rs.30,000/. Tanmay also received a certificate of appreciation in recognition of his innovative idea to address a real life problem.

It is indeed a proud moment for the nation that young minds are working towards finding solutions which will impact the future of the country. A diligent student, he has made the school, his parents and peers proud with this amazing accomplishment. His success will surely inspire his peers to participate in such competitions and be a stepping stone for many more successes to come his way.

Dr. M R Doreswamy Chancellor PES University and Founder President, PES extended hearty congratulations to Tanmay on his well deserved success.

  • Team ENIGMA the journey of making BAJA 2020 All Terrain Vehicle by Department of Mechanical Engineering

Nitish, Team captain says being a member of Team ENIGMA from 3 years; I have led the team for the project BAJA 2020. SAE BAJA is an off-road buggy design event where colleges all over India participate and design a buggy to drive over rough terrain. The span of project has been 6 months including design and manufacturing phase. The project commenced with the design phase in July 2019 with 20 members in the group, sub categorized into five departments viz. Transmission, Suspension, Steering, Brakes and Roll cage. The team participated in SAE Virtual BAJA where it presented its design and approach to building the vehicle for BAJA 2020, and secured qualified with good results out of 200 teams. The manufacturing phase comprised of conducting market surveys, procuring materials, and manufacturing of parts, marketing through sponsorships and finally assembling the vehicle and testing. The project has provided us students with a platform for learning leadership skills, team spirit, finance management, practical fabrication skills, marketing and a full-fledged exposure in industrial sector. The team cleared all the technical tests and was approved with the certification. Previous year BAJA students are very well placed in Mahindra GE, L&T, Quest and Reliance companies with a pay package of 4.5 to 8.5 lakh annual packages.

Aditi – Female Driver says, my journey, being the only female member of Team Enigma was really exciting. Being an automobile enthusiast, I am so happy to get a hands-on experience of building a car. And that's not all.. There are all-girls teams, where the drivers are obviously girls. But being the only one in the team, and still to be chosen to be one of the two drivers of our Team, how cool is that!! Just thinking of driving the car, always gave me an Adrenaline rush. So I was really eager to get on with the project to build the car asap, so that I'll get to drive it one day soon!

As the manufacturing phase began, all of us geared up, building our own sub systems. I belonged to the Steering Department and all I had till then, was theoretical knowledge. I hadn't imagined that, one day, I would apply that and build a steering system for a car. The practical knowledge we get cannot be matched with our classroom sessions; you get so happy to see your hands dirty with grease and dust. Especially, being a girl with no clean, soft hands, makes others look at you in awe. When I told other people that we were building a car and that I was the driver, that proud expression they always had on their faces made me proud of myself!

Working in Team ENIGMA, not only did we learn a lot of technical aspects, but also learnt to deal with the situations when we went through a lot of hardships, be it the poor coordination sometimes between the team members. We learnt that, no matter what happens, work must go on and on, because Time stops for none.

Once the car was built, I felt emotional when I first saw the car running, just like a mother and father when they see their child's first baby steps. I felt really proud to have built a car from scratch; it was just nuts and bolts and pipes a few months ago, but not anymore! I remember jumping around the field when I first saw Sneh, my co driver perform some super stunts with the car. And when I first sat inside the car, and the engine was cranked, I felt the car's vibration and my heartbeat resonating within me, Oh My God!! I cannot explain in words. I was even more thrilled when my fellow teammates complimented me for my driving skills, yes! I performed quite some stunts too, during the testing phase.

I am so grateful to my college and especially to Satish sir, to have given me such a wonderful opportunity, where I learnt that one should never give up, whatever the situation may be and to never forget your goal and strive towards it.

Also, it's given me a taste of being in a male dominated field, which is definitely a stepping stone for my future endeavors, and breaking the society stereotypes.

Most importantly, on behalf of our entire team and our faculty advisor Dr. SV Satish, I would like to thank The Organic World and Invitro Research Solutions Pvt. Ltd. for so kindly sponsoring our team. If not for their contribution, we wouldn't have been able to build a much better car this year. Thank you so much and we hope you continue to support us the same way in the near future as well.

  • Mechanical project paper presented at CMECE Conference 2019 - Hong Kong

The technical paper “Design & Fabrication of Rotary Automated Bicycle Parking System” by Department of Mechanical Engineering, PES University Electronic city campus was selected and presented at 6th International Conference on Mechanical, Electronics and Computer Engineering CMECE held during 25-27- August, 2019 Hong Kong . Rotary Automated bicycle Parking System (R.A.P.S) is a smart and flexible parking system aimed to make maximum utilization of the available space. The parking system currently available does not efficiently make use of the available space and does not have adequate automation features. To overcome this, a smart and flexible system needs to be designed. The vertical rotary mechanism is favored over the horizontal setup as it requires lesser space and can accommodate more number of bicycles in one unit. In this project we have designed and developed a rotary automated bicycle parking system with the use of a rotary mechanism. The system can hold a maximum of 12 bicycles at a time. It consists of 4 docking stations, supporting frame, drive mechanisms, PIN code Reader and PLC. The work space of the system is 4m in width, 4.8m in height and 4m in length. The system is fabricated using Mild Steel which is treated and powder coated to avoid corrosion. Using Mild steel reduces the cost factor and improves the overall strength of the structure The rotary docking stations are rotated about a fixed axis and are driven by a motor of 31 HP. Each docking station has the 3 inbuilt cycle stands. A PLC and a PIN code reader are used to collect Input from the user and process the same information into memory locations of the cycles. When the user inputs his/her PIN code the PLC detects the empty docking station in the system and allots that space to the user. Now the user places his bicycle in the docking station. The system locates the specific memory location when the user inputs the same PIN code again and rotates the system based on the memory location to the exit point. The team constituted Stephen Noby, Sai Mahesh M. S., Sumanth Ashok Habib, and Vaibhav Gowda B. under the mentorship of Dr.S. V. Satish.

  • Bengaluru students ready to clear space debris

When Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) launched a fllock of 104-satellites in a single launch in 2017, buried in the flood of congratulatory messages, were some concerns over adding to the junk orbiting the earth. As space agencies across the world put their heads together to come up with a workable solution to manage space debris, a team of students from PES University, Bengaluru are planning to demonstrate a technology where a dead nano satellite or a micro satellite disintegrates into thin air. The technology involves a spool of carbon fibre wires measuring less than 15 microns in thickness (one micron = one thousandth of a millimetre) ballooning out into a spider web-like structure and pulling away a dead satellite from its orbit before sending it towards earth. The debris will disintegrate as it enters the earth's atmosphere due to the heat generated by friction. The entire process of triggering the wires, installed in a satellite, and creating favourable conditions for dragging the object can be done by activating an in-built generator to produce electric charges, the students said. "It takes about 60 to 70 years for a satellite in low earth orbit to de-orbit and disintegrate on its own. Our simulations have showed that with our system, it will take around 5.5 years or even lesser than that," said Sharan Asundi, a professor at Tuskegee University, who is guiding the students. "The same system can be used to remove the upper stage of a rocket." Students of team Aranea displayed their work at IIT-M's tech fest Shaastra, which concluded on Sunday. They are also preparing to demonstrate the technology 'Ultra-Thin Wires Drag Enhancement System' in PES University's second student satellite PiSat-2 likely to be launched by Isro. Apart from the spool of wires, the system has a generator for supply of power up to 10kv to create repulsion from electric charges and trigger the wires to form a web. Asundi, who is a visiting researcher at NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre, said the system has been designed to exploit the forces created by charged wires and its interaction with space plasma. "The more the number of wires, the better the drag. The area the web of wires may occupy, the number of wires, the mass and the volume of the system will depend on the size of the satellite. We have to ensure we don't add unwanted weight," said Shrikanta Aradhya, a student member of the team. Nasa tracks more than 21,000 pieces of debris orbiting the earth. In June 2018, RemoveDebris satellite was deployed from the International Space Station to demonstrate three different technologies that can capture and de-orbit space junk. Space agencies have systems in place to monitor, catalogue and send alerts about approaching debris which can pose a threat to rocket launches. "As of now space agencies are independently doing research. Discussions are on for a collaboration. As of now we are trying to avoid debris," said retired Isro scientist and Chandrayaan-1 project director Mylsamy Annadurai.

  • App to send alert when vehicle gets towed, coming soon

Many of us have parked our two-wheelers and cars on the road and have had them towed away by cops. Now, an MTech student from the city has designed an app that can give you a notification when this happens. Raghav S, who is from the PG Dept of Computer Science Engineering department of PES University has developed the soon to be launched app for the purpose. The framework for the app has been developed on the Google Navigation application “I have developed an admin app for the RTO or traffic cops and a client app for vehicle owners. The client app has three features one of which is the notification function,” says Raghav. As soon as the concerned authorities take down the number of a vehicle to tow, on the app, an automatic alert is triggered on a client app through a message. The feature has been achieved by collecting the users data such as vehicle number, phone number and other relevant information at the time of installation of the application, adds Raghav. “According to the rules the RTO has to issue an alert in loud speakers before confiscating vehicles. However many a times this does not happen or we do not hear such instructions. My own two wheeler has been towed a few times but I had no clue about it. So this is a feature in the app that will prevent such instances,” he adds. While the app is in the beta version, the finished product will be out within two months, says Jayashree Rangareddy, Professor at the Computer Science Engineering department, and a guide in the project. When asked about getting the RTO and traffic department on board for the project, Dr Jayashree adds, “That bit we have left it to the decison of University. We will also take it forward for the benefit of the public soon enough.” Other applications Another feature integrated in the app is a”live traffic junction” alert for users whereby instructions given out by traffic cops in crowded junctions automatically comes through the app. The alert is based on the distance and location of information of the user approaching the junction. Currently the messages are broadcasted up to a distance of 100 meters radius from the junction, says Raghav. “There is no need to roll down the window and struggle to listen to the loudspeaker or public system, while looking at a congested junction,” he adds.Another feature is to help cab drivers of cab aggregators such as Uber and Ola to get navigation instructions in Kannada rather than in English. They can choose one among the four dialects of Kannada which is supported by the application such as Dharwad Kannada, Mandya Kannada, Coastal Kannada and the Standard Kannada, says Raghav.
