Expert talk on current challenges in matrimonial litigation

The expert talk by Ms. Mrunalini Deshmukh, renowned matrimonial lawyer, offered valuable insights into the complexities of matrimonial law. Ms. Deshmukh emphasized the importance of young lawyers adopting a pro-settlement approach, stressing that it is the advocate's duty to encourage mutual settlements in matrimonial disputes. She pointed out that such litigation not only impacts individuals but also threatens the very foundation of society, the family. As matrimonial law deals with human emotions and relationships, she underscored the need for sensitivity, high ethical standards, and values among lawyers handling these cases. Ms. Deshmukh also highlighted the necessity of orientation and specialized training for lawyers entering the field of matrimonial litigation. She underscored the growing need for implementation of the uniform civil code in India. She brought attention to the challenges arising in NRI marriages, the increasing issues faced by spouses left behind in India when their partners initiate divorce proceedings abroad, often without their knowledge. She also discussed the role of the judiciary in resolving intra-country matrimonial disputes and noted the current legal requirement that parties must seek redressal under the laws of the country where they were married. Dr. J. Suryaprasad, stressed the importance of social responsibility among young lawyers in resolving matrimonial disputes. Prof. Ajoy Kumar was present on the occasion. Dr. Shailashree Haridas delivered the welcome address, and Prof. Jomy George, Chairperson, Faculty of Law extended the vote of thanks.
