A Taste of Terroir: PESU Students Explore Big Banyan Winery

On October 30, 2025, students from the 5th Semester F&B Specialization at PES University embarked on a flavorful journey to the Big Banyan Winery, immersing themselves in the art and science of winemaking. The visit, held from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, offered a rare behind-the-scenes look at one of Karnataka’s most celebrated wineries.

From Vine to Wine: A Day at the Winery
The educational excursion began with a warm welcome and a guided tour of the production unit, where students observed the intricate processes involved in transforming grapes into fine wine. The experience was enriched by:

  • A vineyard walk, showcasing grape varieties and cultivation techniques.
  • A wine tasting session, where students learned to appreciate the nuances of flavor, roma, and texture.


Insights from the Experts
Mr. Parthiban, the host for the day, shared valuable insights into the winery’s unique selling points, grape selection, and branding strategies. The session also included memorable takeaways such as:

  • The 5 S’s of Wine Tasting
  • Wine and cheese pairing techniques
  • Differences between late harvest vs early harvest wines
  • How sugar content influences flavor
  • Choosing wines based on the time of day

With 17 students in attendance, the visit was a compact yet impactful learning experience. Though no formal student organizing team was involved, the event was curated and guided by faculty, ensuring a smooth and enriching experience.
