PES University Conducts Workshop on Bibliometric Analysis Using VOSviewer
On 12th February 2026, the Department of BBA‑HEM at PES University organized an insightful Workshop on Bibliometric Analysis Using VOSviewer at the 5th Floor, Tech Park, beginning at 1:15 p.m. The session aimed to introduce students to the fundamentals of bibliometric methods and the practical tools used in research analytics.
Understanding Bibliometrics Through Hands‑On Learning
The workshop opened with a welcome and introduction, followed by a structured session covering:
- Fundamentals of Bibliometrics
- Overview of research data extraction tools
- Using Publish or Perish (PoP) to retrieve raw citation data from Google Scholar, Crossref, and PubMed
- Visualizing research networks and relationships using VOSviewer, with emphasis on how distance between nodes represents relationship strength
The event provided a strong conceptual and practical foundation for students aspiring to engage in meaningful literature review, research mapping, and academic analysis.
Expert Address
The session included a special address by Prof. Subramanya, Assistant Professor from SRN Adarsh College, Bengaluru. His insights helped students understand the intellectual depth behind bibliometric techniques and the value of visualizing research landscapes.
Event Highlights
The workshop’s theme, "From Data to Visualization", guided students through transforming raw citation data into meaningful knowledge structures. Participants explored research clusters, keyword co‑occurrences, author networks, and emerging fields through hands‑on mapping exercises.
Two key ideas from the workshop resonated strongly:
- “A literature review is no longer just reading what others have written; it is seeing what others have missed.”
- “Each node is a researcher; each link is a conversation.”
These reflections encouraged students to approach research as a dynamic, interconnected ecosystem.
Student Participation and Recognition
The workshop saw participation from 22 students of the IV semester.
A special recognition was given for Best Bibliometric Analysis, awarded to:
- Charmi N Reddy
- Sohan I
Students also supported the event through responsibilities such as photography and certificate designing and printing.
Key Learnings for Students
Participants gained several crucial insights, including:
- How Publish or Perish harvests raw citation data from multiple databases
- How threshold settings in VOSviewer influence map detail — broad landscapes vs. niche clusters
- Understanding cluster colors in VOSviewer, representing research communities
- How distance, not just connecting lines, indicates the strength of relationships
- How overlay visualization (e.g., average publication year) helps identify research foundations versus emerging topics
- The importance of interpreting clusters, understanding research silos, and identifying academic gaps
These learnings are essential for students engaging in academic writing, research projects, and literature reviews.
Conclusion
The Bibliometric Analysis workshop empowered students to move beyond traditional reading-heavy literature reviews by equipping them with analytical tools to visually map the research universe. By integrating data retrieval with visualization techniques, the workshop strengthened students’ capabilities in research interpretation, critical thinking, and academic inquiry.
