In line with its commitment to academic excellence and continuous faculty development, P.E.S Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (PESIMSR), Kuppam, successfully conducted the Basic Course in Medical Education (BCME) Programme in May 2026. Held under the aegis of the CMC Nodal Centre, Vellore, the programme forms a key component of the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) mandated Faculty Development Initiative, designed to elevate the standards of medical teaching across the country.
Strengthening Teaching Excellence in Medical Education
The primary objective of the BCME programme was to train medical educators in the effective implementation of the Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum introduced by the NMC. With a strong emphasis on enhancing the quality of undergraduate medical education in India, the workshop empowered faculty members with the knowledge and skills required to deliver competency-driven, student-focused learning experiences.
Approximately 30 faculty members from PESIMSR participated enthusiastically in the programme and successfully completed the training.
Expert-Led Guidance and Academic Rigor
The sessions were conducted under the observation and guidance of Dr. Srihari Rao, Professor of General Surgery at Padmavathy Medical College, Tirupati, who attended as the official observer nominated by the National Medical Commission. His presence ensured adherence to NMC guidelines and enriched the workshop with valuable insights into modern medical education practices.
Participants were introduced to a range of contemporary teaching-learning methodologies, including
- Competency-based assessment strategies
- Student-centered learning approaches
- Curriculum planning and implementation techniques
- Effective use of teaching-learning tools
- Structured feedback and evaluation methods
- Innovative pedagogical practices for medical educators
These modules equipped faculty members with practical and effective approaches to improving classroom engagement and aligning their teaching with the CBME framework.
Advancing the Culture of Continuous Development
The BCME programme served as a dynamic platform for faculty to refine their teaching skills, adopt modern educational methods, and better understand the evolving needs of medical students. The training reinforced PESIMSR’s emphasis on nurturing a strong academic environment driven by innovation, quality, and continuous improvement.
The Management, Dean & Principal, and organizing committee expressed appreciation for the active involvement of faculty members. They highlighted the importance of ongoing faculty development initiatives in raising the standards of medical education and contributing to improved healthcare outcomes.
A Step Forward in Medical Education Reform
The successful completion of the BCME programme marks another milestone in PESIMSR’s journey towards academic excellence. By equipping educators with the competencies required for modern medical teaching, the institution continues to strengthen its role in shaping the next generation of compassionate, skilled, and well-trained healthcare professionals.
