CTRL + ALT + STEAL: An AI-Powered Mystery Heist Challenge of Strategy and Deduction
CTRL + ALT + STEAL was an innovative AI-themed mystery heist challenge that combined strategy, deduction, and teamwork in an immersive problem-solving experience.
Blending suspense, strategy, and artificial intelligence into an engaging competitive experience, CTRL + ALT + STEAL emerged as a unique mystery-heist event organized by Neural Hive, the AI & ML Club at PES University. Designed to be accessible to students from diverse academic backgrounds, the competition challenged participants to think critically, collaborate effectively, and solve a fictional AI theft case without requiring any prior coding knowledge.

The event revolved around an intriguing storyline in which participants assumed the role of recovery agents tasked with investigating the theft of Neural Hive's prized AI model. Working in teams, students analyzed clues, examined evidence, evaluated risks, and applied deductive reasoning to uncover the identity of the thief, locate the missing model, and determine the best recovery strategy.
Structured as a multi-stage experience, the competition featured four themed rounds followed by a high-stakes finale. Each round tested a different aspect of analytical and strategic thinking, creating an immersive and engaging problem-solving environment.

The first round, The Trading Floor, introduced participants to a resource-management challenge. Teams were provided with Compute Credits and were required to strategically allocate them across various leads, rumors, and pieces of information. Success depended on their ability to identify promising clues while managing limited resources effectively.
Participants then moved to The Training Log, where they were tasked with deciphering a corrupted computer log. This round focused on pattern recognition, logical analysis, and interpretation, encouraging teams to identify hidden information from seemingly fragmented data.

The investigation intensified during The Lineup, a round centered on evidence evaluation. Teams examined a variety of materials and were required to distinguish authentic evidence from AI-generated or fabricated content, including deepfake-style elements. In an age where digital misinformation is increasingly prevalent, this challenge emphasized the importance of critical thinking and media literacy.
Think critically, act strategically, and never stop questioning what you see.
The fourth round, The Vault, introduced an element of risk-versus-reward decision-making. Teams could choose to secure their accumulated Compute Credits or wager a portion of them in exchange for the possibility of earning additional rewards and exclusive clues. This stage tested participants' strategic judgment, risk assessment abilities, and confidence in their investigative progress.
The competition culminated in a thrilling finale where teams consolidated their findings and submitted their final theories. Participants identified their suspected thief, proposed the location of the hidden AI model, and outlined the method of recovery. To heighten the stakes, teams also placed a final wager using their remaining credits, adding an extra layer of excitement to the conclusion.
A standout feature of the event was its dedicated live event website, which served as the central platform for the entire experience. The website streamlined registration, team verification, gameplay management, countdown timers, answer submissions, scoring mechanisms, leaderboard displays, and the final reveal. This seamless integration of technology enhanced participant engagement and contributed to the immersive nature of the competition.

Beyond the mystery narrative, CTRL + ALT + STEAL highlighted important themes at the intersection of artificial intelligence and critical thinking. By incorporating concepts such as AI-generated content, evidence verification, strategic planning, and collaborative problem-solving, the event provided students with a hands-on opportunity to engage with real-world challenges in an entertaining and gamified format.
The competition successfully demonstrated how AI-themed events can foster curiosity, teamwork, and analytical thinking while remaining accessible to participants of all skill levels. Through its innovative design and immersive storytelling, CTRL + ALT + STEAL showcased the creativity and vision of Neural Hive, offering students an unforgettable experience that combined technology, strategy, and mystery into one compelling challenge.
