Building Awareness on Intellectual Property: Biotechnology Department Hosts IPR & Patents Workshop

Innovation is most impactful when it is protected and nurtured. Recognizing the importance of intellectual property in academic research and technological advancement, the Department of Biotechnology, PES University, in association with the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Intellectual Property Management (RGNIIPM), Government of India, Nagpur, organized an online workshop on “Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) & Patents and Design Filing” under the National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission (NIPAM) on October 27, 2026.

The workshop was designed to create awareness among students, research scholars, and faculty members about the significance of intellectual property rights and the mechanisms available for safeguarding intellectual creations. As innovation and entrepreneurship continue to play a vital role in scientific progress, understanding intellectual property has become essential for researchers and aspiring innovators.

The session was led by Dr. Bharat N. Suryawanshi, Assistant Controller of Patents & Designs at RGNIIPM, Nagpur, who served as the resource person for the programme. Drawing from his expertise in intellectual property administration, he provided valuable insights into patents, industrial designs, and the procedures involved in filing and protecting intellectual assets.

Great discoveries begin with innovation, but their future is secured through intellectual property protection.

Participants were introduced to the fundamentals of intellectual property rights, including their role in encouraging innovation, protecting original ideas, and promoting knowledge-driven growth. The session also offered a practical understanding of patent and design filing processes, enabling attendees to appreciate the legal and strategic aspects of protecting inventions and creative outputs.

A key highlight of the workshop was the interactive engagement with the expert from RGNIIPM, which allowed participants to gain clarity on various aspects of intellectual property protection. The discussions emphasized the growing relevance of IPR in academic research, technology development, startups, and entrepreneurship, encouraging students and researchers to consider intellectual property as an integral part of the innovation lifecycle.

The workshop served as a valuable platform for fostering awareness about intellectual property and empowering participants with knowledge that can support future research and innovation endeavors. By facilitating such initiatives, the Department of Biotechnology, PES University continues to strengthen an innovation-oriented academic culture and encourage responsible research practices among students and scholars.

The event successfully reinforced the importance of protecting intellectual creations and highlighted the role of intellectual property in transforming ideas into impactful and sustainable innovations. Through collaborations with national institutions such as RGNIIPM, PES University remains committed to equipping its students and researchers with the knowledge and tools required to thrive in an increasingly innovation-driven world.
