The Talent Wars: Bringing Recruitment Strategy to Life at PES University

The Department of BBA at PES University recently hosted an innovative and immersive event, "The Talent Wars – A Live Recruitment Draft," designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world talent acquisition practices. Organized by People's Partner - The HR Club, the event transformed the traditional concept of recruitment into a dynamic, competitive simulation where students experienced the challenges of hiring, negotiation, and strategic decision-making firsthand.

A Unique Recruitment Simulation
Held on September 9, 2026 at the Techpark facility, the event brought together 14 teams comprising five members each, with approximately 75 students participating in a high-energy recruitment challenge. Equipped with a virtual hiring budget of ₹60 lakh, teams competed to build the strongest workforce while balancing financial constraints, role requirements, and organizational priorities.

Unlike conventional case competitions, The Talent Wars replicated the realities of modern recruitment. Participants were encouraged to think beyond impressive résumés and evaluate candidates holistically, considering cultural fit, potential risks, negotiation dynamics, and long-term organizational impact.

Round 1: The Draft
The event began with “The Draft,” a live recruitment auction where teams competed to hire candidates for three key positions: Senior Designer, Client Success Lead, and Operations Generalist. Working within a fixed budget, teams strategically bid on candidates from a shared talent pool.

This round tested several critical HR competencies

  • Budget management and resource allocation
  • Candidate evaluation and role fit analysis
  • Negotiation strategy
  • Decision-making under time pressure

Teams were required not only to secure candidates but also to justify their hiring choices, reinforcing the importance of evidence-based recruitment decisions.

Round 2: The Counteroffer
Just when participants felt confident about their hiring decisions, the competition introduced unexpected challenges through “The Counteroffer.”

Teams faced realistic recruitment scenarios, including

  • Competing offers from rival organizations
  • New information uncovered during reference checks
  • Significant changes in candidate expectations
  • Multiple candidates reconsidering their commitments

These twists forced participants to reassess their strategies and respond quickly to changing circumstances, mirroring the unpredictability of today's hiring environment.

A particularly engaging aspect of this round was the AI vs. Human Judgment Challenge. Teams reviewed AI-generated assessments of their hiring decisions and were asked to either support or challenge the recommendations. This encouraged critical thinking and demonstrated that while AI can provide valuable insights, human judgment remains essential in evaluating complex talent decisions.

Round 3: The Boardroom Pitch
The highest-performing teams advanced to “The Boardroom Pitch,” where they presented their recruitment strategies before a panel.

Finalists discussed

  • Their hiring choices and rationale
  • Trade-offs made during the recruitment process
  • Potential risks in their workforce selections
  • AI-generated evaluations and their responses
  • The value of human insight in decision-making

This final round strengthened students' presentation skills, strategic communication abilities, and confidence in defending business decisions before leadership stakeholders.

Key Learning Outcomes
The Talent Wars delivered far more than a competitive experience. Participants gained practical exposure to challenges commonly faced by recruiters and HR professionals, including

  • Strategic budget allocation
  • Holistic candidate assessment
  • Negotiation and competitive bidding
  • Risk management in hiring
  • Adaptability during recruitment disruptions
  • Effective use of AI as a decision-support tool
  • Leadership communication and stakeholder management

These lessons provided students with valuable industry-relevant skills that will benefit them in future managerial and HR roles.
