Community Medicine PESUIMSR

On February 11, 2026, the Department of Community Medicine at the PES University Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (PESUIMSR), in collaboration with its Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC), successfully conducted National Deworming Day at Government High School, Gottigere.

This initiative formed part of India’s ongoing public health effort to reduce the prevalence of soil‑transmitted helminth infections among school‑aged children—a vulnerable group disproportionately affected by parasitic infestations.

Ensuring Safe Deworming Under Medical Supervision
During the program, students received Albendazole tablets, administered strictly according to national guidelines and under professional medical supervision. Faculty members, healthcare staff, and interns from PESUIMSR facilitated the process to ensure safety, accuracy, and comfort for all participating children.

Health Education: Building Awareness Beyond the Tablet
Before the deworming activity, an engaging health education session was conducted to help students understand:

  • The importance of regular deworming
  • Proper handwashing practices
  • Benefits of maintaining personal hygiene
  • The role of footwear usage in preventing infection
  • Importance of safe drinking water

The session encouraged students to take an active role in safeguarding their health and to adopt healthy daily habits.

Active Participation and Positive Community Impact
Faculty, interns, and UHTC healthcare personnel supported the event end‑to‑end—from health education to medication administration—helping ensure a smooth and impactful experience for the students. The initiative was warmly welcomed by school staff and learners, reinforcing PESUIMSR’s commitment to community engagement and preventive healthcare.

A Step Toward a Healthier Future
National Deworming Day serves as an essential intervention in reducing absenteeism, improving nutritional status, and enhancing cognitive development among schoolchildren. Through programs like these, PESUIMSR continues to extend its reach beyond hospital walls, strengthening community health through proactive, preventive action.
