Against the Clock: IJMC Students Take on a High‑Intensity Video Production Challenge at PES University
PESU RR Campus

Learning media production goes far beyond theory—it requires speed, precision, creativity, and the ability to perform under pressure. Bringing this reality into the classroom, students of the Institute of Journalism and Mass Communication (IJMC), PES University, participated in an engaging and high-energy video production exercise titled “Against the Clock” during the Academic Year 2025–26.

Held on the PES University campus, the activity was designed to simulate real-world professional conditions, where time constraints are as critical as technical and creative skills.

A Race Against Time and Creativity
The “Against the Clock” exercise challenged students to conceptualise, plan, shoot, and assemble a complete video within a strict time limit. Working against the ticking clock, students experienced the urgency and discipline required in professional video production environments such as newsrooms, advertising shoots, and digital media studios.

The time-bound nature of the task pushed students to make rapid creative and technical decisions, encouraging adaptability, clarity of roles, and efficiency in execution.

Mastering the Fundamentals of Visual Storytelling
Through the intense hands-on exercise, students gained practical exposure to key elements of video production, including

  • Selection of appropriate camera angles and shot types
  • Understanding framing, composition, and visual balance
  • Maintaining pace and rhythm in fast-moving video narratives
  • Sequencing shots effectively for maximum impact

By applying these fundamentals in real time, students strengthened their grasp of visual storytelling, one of the core pillars of journalism and media production.

Beyond Technical Skills: Learning to Work Under Pressure
While technical learning was central to the exercise, the activity also focused on essential professional skills. Students enhanced their abilities in

  • Teamwork and collaboration under tight deadlines
  • Time management and task prioritisation
  • On-field problem-solving when faced with real-time challenges
  • Communicating clearly and efficiently within production teams

These competencies are crucial for media professionals working in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments.

Learning by Doing: IJMC’s Praxis-Based Approach
The “Against the Clock” exercise exemplified IJMC’s praxis-based learning philosophy, where students learn through direct engagement rather than observation alone. By working hands-on with equipment, ideas, and constraints, students developed creative confidence, practical competence, and resilience.

Such experiential activities bridge the gap between classroom instruction and industry expectations, preparing students for the realities of contemporary media practice.

Preparing Media Professionals for a Dynamic Industry
By immersing students in real-world production challenges, the initiative reinforced PES University’s commitment to industry-aligned pedagogy. The exercise ensured that IJMC students graduate not only with theoretical knowledge, but also with the technical skills, creative instincts, and professional discipline required in today’s rapidly evolving media landscape.
