Creating awareness about breastfeeding and infant nutrition is essential for ensuring healthy beginnings and improving maternal and child health outcomes. As part of the observance of Breastfeeding Week 2026, the Department of Community Medicine at PES University Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (PESUIMSR), through its Urban Health Training Centre, conducted a health awareness programme at Gottigere Primary Health Centre (PHC) on August 7, 2026.

The initiative was organized to educate expectant mothers about the importance of breastfeeding and appropriate infant feeding practices, empowering them with the knowledge needed to make informed healthcare decisions for themselves and their children.

Encouraging Healthy Feeding Practices
The programme was attended by 15 to 20 pregnant women who actively participated in discussions and learning activities focused on maternal and child nutrition.

Healthcare professionals highlighted the critical importance of breastfeeding and explained its role in supporting infant growth, immunity, and overall development. Participants were educated on the recommended time to initiate breastfeeding after delivery and the significance of establishing proper breastfeeding practices from the earliest stages of an infant's life.

Understanding the Benefits of Exclusive Breastfeeding
A key focus of the awareness session was the importance of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of a baby's life. The participants learned about the numerous health benefits that breastfeeding provides to both mother and child, including improved immunity, optimal nutrition, healthy growth, and protection against common childhood illnesses.

The session also addressed common concerns and encouraged mothers to adopt evidence-based breastfeeding practices that promote long-term health and well-being.

Awareness on Complementary Feeding
In addition to breastfeeding education, the programme provided detailed guidance on complementary feeding, commonly referred to as weaning.

Participants were informed about

  • The appropriate age to introduce complementary foods
  • Suitable age-specific nutritional options for infants
  • The importance of maintaining breastfeeding while introducing complementary foods
  • Strategies for ensuring balanced nutrition during the transition to solid foods

These discussions aimed to help mothers understand how proper feeding practices contribute to healthy physical and cognitive development in children.

Empowering Mothers Through Community Health Education
The awareness programme served as an important platform for strengthening health knowledge among expectant mothers and encouraging positive infant feeding behaviors. By providing practical information and addressing questions related to breastfeeding and child nutrition, the initiative helped participants build confidence in caring for their newborns.

Supporting Healthier Futures
Breastfeeding awareness programmes play a vital role in improving maternal and child health by promoting informed decision-making and preventive healthcare practices. Through community outreach initiatives such as this, PESUIMSR continues to contribute to public health education and support healthier families within the community.

The programme successfully reinforced the importance of early breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding, and appropriate complementary feeding practices, helping expectant mothers prepare for a healthier future for themselves and their children.
